Escarpment Te Rehua 2015 Martinborough New Zealand

Escarpment Te Rehua 2015 Martinborough New Zealand

Te Rehua is one of the four wines of Escarpment’s Insight Series which was created by Larry McKenna with the desire to craft a Pinot Noir that was purely dedicated to expressing the unique vineyard characteristics, collectively known as terroir, of the Martinborough Terraces. 23 years-old vines grown in unique sheltered site of Te Rehua, 1.1 ha only, gives the wine complexity with black cherry/plum fruit flavours.

Made with traditional methods. Fermented using indigenous yeasts in traditional wood cuvees, matured 18 months in 30% new French oak barriques and fined using egg whites to protect fruity flavours and softening the mouth feel and texture.

Very limited, highly regarded wines.

Ranked 9th in James Suckling's Top 100 New Zealand Wines of 2017
93 points, Wine Spectator - Dense and concentrated, with herb and cola accents to the tangy berry and plum flavors. Dark and brooding, with date nut bread, tobacco and baking spice details lingering on the finish. Drink now through 2027. 300 cases made.
19,5/20 points Raymond Chan - ...This has excellent depth and concentration allied to perfumed lift and complexity... This is a beautifully rich, vibrant and powerful, but impeccably balanced Pinot Noir with aromatic black fruits and subtle layers of complexity.

Martinborough, New Zealand

Martinborough is a small town with around 1,500 residents and surrounding district has some of New Zealand's most highly respected boutique wineries. Martinborough's cool climate and excellent soils are perfect for the production of balanced, elegant wines made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Its climate is compared with that of Burgundy in France and famous for its exceptional quality of Pinot Noir, arguably one of the bests in the World. The style of this wine is regarded to be more complex than its counterparts from another famous Pinot Noir region, Central Otago.

Escarpment is a wine estate that was established in 1998 in the New Zealand region of Martinborough. It is known for its powerful and complex Pinot Noir wines, and particularly its flagship wine Kupe, which is widely regarded as a benchmark for that variety in New Zealand. Winemaker Larry McKenna is one of the founding winemakers in Martinborough and has been dubbed "The Prince of Pinot Noir".
