Escarpment, Kiwa, Martinborough, New Zealand 2015

Escarpment, Kiwa, Martinborough, New Zealand 2015

Kiwa is one of the four wines of Insight Series which was created by Larry McKenna with the desire to craft a Pinot Noir that was purely dedicated to expressing the unique vineyard characteristics, known as terroir, of the Martinborough Terraces. This is an outstanding example of classic Pinot Noir, savoury, complex, spicy wine.

Made with traditional methods like in Burgundy. Fermented using indigenous yeasts in traditional wood cuvees, matured 18 months in 40% new French oak barriques and fined using egg whites to protect fruity flavours and softening the mouth feel and texture.

Very limited, highly regarded beautiful wines.

Ranked 30th in James Suckling's Top 100 New Zealand Wines of 2017

94 points, Wine Spectator - Dusty white pepper and rose petal notes are aromatic, leaping out of the glass to complement the dense core of mineral-laced dark fruit flavors, with plenty of anise and nutmeg details. The intensity gains momentum on the finish, which is expressive and generous. Drink now through 2027. 300 cases made.

19/20 points, Raymond Chan - ...this is a complex, savoury black-fruited Pinot Noir with earth, whole bunch and herbal complexities on a well-structured and textural palate.

Martinborough, New Zealand

Martinborough is a small town with around 1,500 residents and surrounding district has some of New Zealand's most highly respected boutique wineries. Martinborough's cool climate and excellent soils are perfect for the production of balanced, elegant wines made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Its climate is compared with that of Burgundy in France and famous for its exceptional quality of Pinot Noir, arguably one of the bests in the World. The style of this wine is regarded to be more complex than its counterparts from another famous Pinot Noir region, Central Otago.

Escarpment is known for its powerful and complex Pinot Noir wines, and particularly its flagship wine Kupe, which is widely regarded as a benchmark for that variety in New Zealand. Larry McKenna – known as Larry McPinot – is the man behind Escarpment. His name goes hand-in-hand with the best quality Pinot Noir from New Zealand. Escarpment is registered as a Sustainable NZ producer and is currently following a five-year plan to become organically certified.
